Vmware Workstation 8.0.5 Serial Key

I am running VMware WS 6 on a Opensuse 10.2 system (Athlon X2 4800+ CPU, ASUS A8n-SLI boad with Cool and Quiet technology, kernel 2.6.18.8-0.5-default). Guest is a Win XP (SP2) system (one CPU).

I am using the system on a daily basis now and I noticed something strange which I cannot remember from the WS 5 versions.

The guest sometimes shows a wrong CPU frequency and to my astonishment there sometimes appear values which are definitely too high.

I got the impression that VMmware somehow somehow 'measures' the CPU frequency when loading its kernel modules during system start up. Therefore I tested the system behaviour with several reboots and got the following series of values for the CPU frequency reported by the host and the guest.

host: 2.4 GHz -> guest: 2.41 GHz

host: 2.4 GHz -> guest: 2.41 GHz

host: 2.4 GHz -> guest: 2.75 GHz

host: 2.4 GHz -> guest: 2.75 GHz

Vmware Workstation Pro Key

host: 2.4 GHz -> guest: 3.05 GHz

host: 2.4 GHz -> guest: 2.44 GHz

Vmware Workstation 8.0.5 Serial Key Generator

host: 2.4 GHz -> guest: 2.41 GHz

host: 2.4 GHz -> guest: 3.05 GHz

host: 2.4 GHz -> guest: 2.75 GHz

host: 2.4 GHz -> guest: 2.41 GHz

host: 2.4 GHz -> guest: 2.41 GHz

In cases where I got 3.05 GHz value on the guest the windows guest was behaving strangely - cursor jumpy and other side effects.

In KPowersave I have deactivated throttling of the CPU. Therefore the host runs with a constant 2.4 GHz value. /proc/cpuinfo and /proc/acpi/processor/CPUx/info show the correct values.

Questions:

Is this behaviour OK? I have not noticed it when running WS 5.

Does VMware measure/estimate the CPU speed or does it get the values from /proc/cpuinfo ?

Workstation

Can I set the hosts CPU frequency to a constant value in the vmware configuration file for the virtual machine - and if so what is the correct statement to insert?
